Google partners with government agencies to provide better online public record searches

The Internet search company, Google Inc. is now working hand in hand with government agencies into making hard-to-find public records easily accessible over the Internet.  The company has announced that the states of Arizona, California, Utah and Virginia have already joined in their advocacy of making public records available to all.

Newly available records will not be given exclusively to search engines owned by Yahoo, Microsoft and Google.

Difficulty in searching for information over the Internet is mostly blamed on search engine companies since these are the most popular means of getting hold of online records. But then again, the government should also take some of the blame because they do not allow search companies access to their databases.

Such a partnership could open doors for data searches into providing high quality, comprehensive, credible and updated data in every search.

This move however is seen as a threat to privacy advocates. Access to such public information has raised concerns over national security and privacy. And despite the good intentions behind this action, there is always the threat of identity thefts and violations of privacy rights.

Some people have expressed the need to make some public records confidential. Health and financial records could contain important and crucial information such as social security numbers – information that should never be shown online.

Complaints have also been filed against Google accusing the company of keeping tracks of web surfers who access government information in order to target marketing ads at them.

In spite of this, there are high hopes that this partnership between Google Inc. and the government will make it easy for the average citizen to access information over the web.
