Case Story

Police Link Woman's Murder to Jilted-Ex

On September 15, 2002, cops in Layfayette, Indiana got a call about a body of a woman left by the side of the road. When the woman was identified, investigators immediately had a lead to work on. This was not the first time Lafayette cops had heard the name of the vicitim, Juanita Santa Rosa. Just a few months earlier, cops say, there was an incident between Juanita and her ex-boyfriend, Tereso Pacheco.   On June 28th, police had been called out to Juanita's apartment. Her new boyfriend, Edmundo Huerta, claimed that Pacheco had approached him and demanded that he stop seeing Juanita. Edmundo refused and said Pacheco left in a hurry, but later returned with a shotgun. Edmundo was standing on his balcony when he told police he saw Pacheco pointing a shotgun at him and then firing. Edmundo was lucky enough not to be injured, but it was obvious to him and police that Pacheco was a dangerous man. Cops scoured the area looking for Pacheco, but he was long gone. Investigators believe Pacheco left the state soon after the incident, possibly to Wisconsin.

A Madman Resurfaces

Police say Pacheco returned to Lafayette in September.  And when he did, police say, he was in no better mood than when he left.   Investigators believe sometime after 2 am on Sept. 15, he was able to gain entry into Juanita's house and abducted her. It was just a few hours later that a passerby found Juanita's dead body.  She had been shot in the head and dumped by the side of a road.    Police immediately started to look for Pacheco, but he was once again, long gone from Lafayette. A break in the case came two days later, when a Utah police officer came upon what appeared to be a broken down vehicle.  The men inside the car told the officer that they had already called for help and it was on the way.  So the officer left.  However, when he drove by a while later, the car was still there, but the occupants had vanished. It was several weeks before Utah cops realized the car they had in their possession was being sought in connection to Juanita's murder in Indiana. However it was worth the wait. Investigators in Indiana say forensic results came back linking the car to the murder and Pacheco was charged with killing Juanita Santa Rosa.
