Case Story

Convicted Murderer Escapes

Local and federal authorities are searching for Teddy Lynne Ellis, an escapee from the Dick Conners Correctional Facility in Hominy, Oklahoma. Ellis was convicted of murder and was serving a life sentence when he decided to take off. Back on June 19, 1982, 17-year-old Teddy Ellis and two of his friends were driving towards Norman, Oklahoma. When they saw a lone hitchhiker, Dale Eugene Spurgin, they decided to pick him up. Ellis got excited when he learned Dale was carrying a black-powdered .38--it was a collector's gun, and he wanted to try it out and get some target practice. Dale let him practice--but wasn't expecting to be the target. Dale stood on a wooden bridge with Ellis, but instead of shooting over the bridge, Ellis shot Dale. He was struck twice in the head and back, and died on the scene.

Ellis Cuts His Own Sentence Short

Cops tracked down Ellis and he was arrested on June 29, 1982. Ellis was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. It appeared justice would be served, but Ellis had other plans.  On May 24, 1986, Elliis and four of his fellow inmates escaped from the Dick Conners Correctional Facilty by crawling through a storm drain and cutting their way through a perimeter fence. Ellis hasn't been seen since.
