Case Story

Police Searching for Scott James Brinegar

Police say that at approximately 10:15 on the morning of August 6, 1996, Scott James Brinegar entered the Signet Bank on Warwick Avenue in Newport News, Virginia. According to police, Brinegar was carrying a black and red nylon lunch bag with wires hanging out of it.   Once inside, he approached bank teller Dawn Williamson, and showed her the lunch bag. He told her he had a bomb inside, and demanded that she give him $20,000 in hundred dollar bills. According to officials, she told him that she did not have that much money but did give him approximately $6,371. Once he had the loot, Brinegar left the lunch bag, calmly walked out of the bank, and slipped down the street into a trailer park. After securing the area and locating the lunchbox, officials discovered that the bag was filled with duct tape and wires, but no bomb. Police scoured the area before finally arriving at Brinegar's trailer. While searching the trailer, they found key evidence. Apparently, Brinegar had thought to change his appearance, and cut his hair. What he didn't think about was getting rid of the evidence. Investigators found his hair clippings still in the trailer's toilet. Police also found Signet money wrappers and the same tape and wires found at the crime scene. Brinegar, however, was no where to be found.

Brinegar Strikes Again

After fleeing Virginia, Brinegar made his way to North Carolina where he allegedly was up to his old tricks--police say he held up another bank in Raleigh on August 20, 1997. Dressed in a suit and tie and carrying a briefcase, officials say Brinegar told bank employees that he was a police detective and asked to speak with the manager. Once inside the manager's office, he told her that it was a robbery, and that he had a bomb and a police scanner with him. According to police, he told the manager to fill the briefcase with money from the bank vault, but she said it would not unlock until a specific time. She offered to collect money from the tellers, but he said that would draw too much attention. Brinegar walked out empty handed and has not been seen since.
