Case Story
Police Say Gang Member Commits Murder and Kidnapping
Police say Rafael Guillen and Primavera Baltazar, members of a high profile Los Angeles street gang, called \"Varrio Maravilla,\" were paid $10,000 by Ana Almaraz to kill her husband's lover, Mercedes Caballero Saldana. According to officials, the two gang members drove to Mercedes' house in El Paso, TX on January 28, 2000, posed as flower delivery people, knocked on the door, and were able to talk their way into the home. Then, police say they bound and gagged Mercedes with duct tape and stabbed her to death in front of her two year old daughter. Warrants for capital murder were obtained for all three, Rafael Guillen, Primavera Baltazar, and Ana Almaraz. Almaraz and Baltazar have been located and taken into custody, but Rafael Guillen is on the run.
Rafael Guillen Goes South of the Border
Rafael Guillen was in hiding until March 6, 2001 when police say he assaulted his ex-girlfriend, Leticia Torres. According to officials, Guillen stunned Leticia Torres with a tazer gun, bound and gagged her with duct tape, put her into his Ford Expedition and began driving towards Mexico. Police say as he was driving the two hours from LA to San Diego to cross the border into Mexico, Leticia was able to get loose and jump into the driver's side where a struggle ensued causing an accident. The truck crashed into a telephone pole, and Leticia was able to escape. She got out of the truck and screamed frantically for help. A bystander rescued her, walked with her back to the border, and got help from Mexican customs officers. In the meantime, officials say, Guillen jumped into a following car, possibly his cousin's car, fled to Tijuana and hasn't been seen since.
