Case Story

Police: Husband Murders Ex-Wife

Michael Lee McGuffey is wanted for the murder of his ex-wife, Michele. Police say McGuffey asked Michele to meet him on September 27, 1993 at the Mount Vernon, Washington restaurant where Michele worked as a waitress. McGuffey told Michele he was moving away and wanted to discuss filing their final tax return before he left, police say. The couple were divorced the month before after almost eight years of marriage.

Based on eyewitness accounts, officials say Michele had just parked her car when McGuffey approached. Michele remained in the car and immediately locked the doors. Police say because of his past violent behavior, Michele agreed to meet McGuffey inside the restaurant only, where others would be present. According to officials after convincing Michele to let him in the car, a struggle ensued and McGuffey shot Michele in the head with a handgun. Michele died instantly, and police say McGuffey ran on foot from the scene of the crime.
