Case Story

Police: Man Tried To Kill Girlfriend's Daughter

Police are searching for Luis Ortiz, who they say tried to kill a young girl. According to officials, Luis Ortiz attempted to drown his girlfriend's daughter in order to keep her from reporting him for sexual abuse. On March 15, 2001, Luis Ortiz allegedly took his girlfriend's daughter into the middle of Lake Barton on a bass boat and asked the victim to go to the back of the boat and look at a \"light\" that needed to be fixed. While leaning over the back of the boat, police say Ortiz pushed the victim into the lake. He then, according to officials, tried to run her over with the boat. When he couldn't run her over, police say he jumped into the lake and held her head under water until she passed out. Police believe Ortiz brought the limp, lifeless body to the shore and was planning on making her death look like a tragic boating accident. But, when he carried her body to shore, his plan was interrupted thanks to a good Samaritan. Francisco Arcila, who worked with Ortiz, frantically tried to breathe life into the girl's lungs. His efforts were cut short when Ortiz picked her up, put her in the car and drove to the nearest hospital. At the hospital, Ortiz told police that the girl fell out of the boat. But, the little girl was telling a different story. According to police, she said that Ortiz had been sexually absusing her and tried to kill her to cover up his dark secret. He's been on the run ever since.
