Case Story

Breaking All The Rules

Jesse Clayton Cole became a free man on September 10, 2004, after doing time for a child molestation conviction in Scott County, Ind. He started his new life off by doing the right thing and registering as a sex offender with the Noble County Sheriff's Department, as he was required to do by law. But that's when police say Cole stopped doing the right thing. In August 2006, it came to the attention of the Noble County Sheriff's Department that not only had Cole moved to a different address with notifying anyone, but he was living less than 600 feet away from an elementary school. Indiana law prohibits convicted sex offenders from residing within 1,000 feet of a school property, a youth program center, or a public park. This put Cole in violation of two laws -- he failed to register as a sex offender at his new address, and he was living too close to a school.

Bad Choice For A Babysitter

Once authorities started to look into Cole's life a little bit more, they realized that not only was he living near an elementary school full of young children, but he was living in a house with a 5-year-old boy. When police questioned the mother of this boy, who was described as once one of Cole's female friends, she claimed that Cole rarely slept at her house and he was never left alone with her son. Unfortunately, further investigation revealed that she was lying on both accounts. Cole had been living at her house for almost a month, and he served as her babysitter whenever she had to go to work. The Kenallville Police Department was able to quickly gather evidence to incriminate Cole, and issued a warrant for his arrest, charging him with child molestation, failure to register as a sex offender, and a sex offender residency offense.

Without A Trace

On the same day the first warrant for Cole's arrest was issued, police say he fled the state in a Jeep that he co-owned with a former girlfriend. Police say they were able to track him through his cell phone records, and within 20 days he traveled across Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Minnesota, and North Dakota. Over a month after Cole disappeared, he contacted his former girlfriend and told her he was going to mail her the keys for the Jeep. Police later found the Jeep in a parking garage at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. Police have no idea where Cole could be now, and have not been able to track him through his cell phone since October 2006. They need your help to find this man before he hurts another innocent young child.
