Search Still On, But South Carolina Sightings Prove Deadend So Far

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are still searching for 12-year-old Jami Hicks and her stepfather, James Hudachek in Texas and South Carolina as well as other states - including Florida and California - where callers reported seeing people who resembled the pair.  Police said just one tip from South Carolina - a Saturday sighting that led to an AMBER Alert in in that state - had been substantiated. However, they have been unable to confirm any new sightings there and the AMBER Alert for S.C has been canceled. None of the many calls police received after the alert was issued panned out.  According to investigators they don't know if this lack of response in South Carolina means Jami and Hudachek were there and they have gone or they were not there at all. The AMBER alert is still on in Texas and police in Mesquite, Texas still consider the search for Jami and Hudachek a prioirity investigation.

The Disappearance

Police say James Roy Hudachek abducted his 12 year old step-daughter Jami Hicks.  According to police, on Friday, September 3rd Jami's mom went to a football game leaving Jami alone with Hudachek and her 9 year old twin brothers.  When Jami's older sister came home around 11 p.m. that evening she discovered the twin boys there alone and Jami and Hudachek were no where in sight.  That morning Jami's mother filed a missing persons report.  Later that Saturday she discovered a note written by Hudachek expressing romantic feelings for 12 year old Jami.  She says in this letter he states he wishes Jami were his wife.  She also informed police that Hudachek, a part time pastor, was sexually abused as a child.  Hudachek's truck was found abandoned at work. An AMBER Alert was issued early Tuesday morning. Police say Hudachek is driving a black 2000 Ford Focus with dealer tags that expire on 9/25/04.
