Case Story
Living The American Dream
James Eric Emery's story sounds like many other people's around the United States. He was born in the small town of Mt. Vernon, Texas and that's where he'd remain for much of his life. While in high school, he met the young woman who would eventually become his wife. Eric, as he was known, began working at the First National Bank of Mt. Vernon at the age of 16. Soon thereafter, he was entrusted with access to the bank's computers. It seemed that Eric was destined to work in the banking industry. At 27, Eric had become a loan officer at the bank and had three beautiful young children. He seemed to be living the American dream. But there was something lurking in the shadows. He was hiding a secret...a secret that would rear its ugly head in August 2004.
Out Of Character
On Saturday, August 28, 2004, Eric Emery showed up for work at the bank as he usually did. By about 2:30pm, he'd closed the bank and was on his way home. But what happened in between was something so out of character that friends, family and even cops are scratching their heads. Cops say Emery is seen on surveillance tape pilfering the bank out of a huge amount of money. Then, he calmly left, cash in hand.
On The Run With Kids In Tow
The next day, Emery told his wife he was taking his three children to visit his grandmother in a nursing home. By Sunday evening, Emery's wife Joey hadn't heard or seen her husband or kids. She became nervous and drove to all her husband's haunts, hoping to find him. She never did. As the sun came up, Joey was sure something bad had happened to her family. But news that he'd stolen from his own bank hit her like a brick. Now, Joey Emery wants her three children back and to know what caused her husband to throw away his American dream. It is easy to throw out the typical reasons for taking off with a bag full of cash. Did he have a mistress? Did he have a gambling problem? Was he heavily in debt? Investigators are digging into Emery's past, but if any of those hypotheses were true, why would he take off with his children? Cops hope that by finding Emery, they can get answers to this perplexing disappearance.
