Case Story

This Boy Scout Leader Betrayed His Troop

Fred Wanamaker is wanted for sexually abusing four young boys over the course of twelve years. Virginia State Police say Wanamaker used his status as a family friend and Boy Scout leader to take advantage of three brothers and one of their friends. Police say Wanamaker was a neighbor of the three brothers in Yogaville -- a new-age community in Buckingham County, Va. They say Wanamaker befriended the mom and her kids and over time he became a friend of the family and a father figure to the children. Wanamaker, a sailor by trade, eventually became a Boy Scout leader, taught neighborhood kids special courses on navigation, and took them on camping trips.

Wanamaker Establishes A Pattern

But soon, cops say Wanamaker made his true intentions known. Police say Wanamaker started molesting the oldest of the brothers at about age 10 and continued until he was about 13. At that time, he allegedly shifted his sexual attention to the second oldest child for a few years. When the youngest brother turned 10 and started going on camping trips with Wanamaker, the oldest brother -- who was by that time an adult -- felt he had to tell his mother what had happened to him, lest it happen to his brother as well. But cops say he was too late. According to police, all three brothers and one of their friends from the Boy Scout troop had been sexually assaulted. Wanamaker's alleged abuse spanned from 1985 to 1997.
