Case Story
Death Reports Are Premature
Reports of the death of Fazul Abdullah Mohammad, one of the FBI's most wanted suspected terrorists, are premature, according to recent reports out of Somalia. The latest U.S. intelligence says that Mohammad is still alive and on the run. Military aircraft struck in Somalia on Monday, January 8, 2007, in hopes of bringing down members of the Al Qaida leadership in the East African nation, government officials say. U.S. sources say eight to 10 people were killed, but their identities have not yet been revealed. News agencies initially announced that Mohammad was one of the casualties, but recent reports have presented a different story -- they say this alleged mass murderer is still on the run.
Two Bombs, Hundreds Of Casualties
It was one of the worst terrorist attacks before 9/11. In a coordinated attack in 1998, the US Embassies in two East African countries, Kenya and Tanzania, were laid to waste by truck bombs. Over two hundred innocent lives were taken in those attacks, and 4500 people were injured. The FBI and other agencies have worked tirelessly to identify those responsible for the killings and bring them to justice. An indictment brought by the U.S. Attorney in New York outlines what the government thinks happened in Africa. They lay the blame for the death and destruction at the feet of al-Quida -- masterminded by Usama bin Laden and Ayman Al Zawahiri. Authorities say Fazul Mohammad was one of the planners of the Nairobi bombing. They say he rented a villa in a chic part of town, where the preparations were made. They say he bought a Suzuki Samurai, which was used to transport the explosives to the site. And on the day of the bombings, Mohammad is accused of acting as getaway driver for those transporting the bombs to the US Embassy. After it was over, Mohammad allegedly had the villa cleaned and got on a plane to the Comoros Island. Now the U.S. government is desperate to get their hands on Mohammad. Like his co-defendants in the embassy bombing case, there is a reward being offered for as much as $25 million for the arrest and/or conviction of Fazul Mohammad. He's managed to avoid capture for more than eight years now, but officials hope his long reign of alleged terror will soon be over.
