Case Story

Drugs and Money Turns to Murder

The U.S. Marhsal Service and the DEA in New York are looking for Edward Mathis for the 1994 murder of Ari Espinal and his wife, Millie, in Staten Island, New York. According to deputy Marshals, Mathis knew Ari, a drug dealer, had a stash of money in his house. On December 20, 1994, deputies say Mathis and his brother, Michael, went to Ari's house to steal some of the money. However, police say that Mathis shot Ari sixteen times with a submachine gun and shot and killed Millie Espinal with nine shots to the face. Fortunately, their four-year-old son was spared, locked in a closet for fourteen hours before being found by a family friend. Deputies say the Mathis' brothers got away with $700,000. According to officials, both brothers moved out of town and opened their own beauty supply stores as a front for their lucrative drug business. Michael Mathis was arrested in Richmond, Virginia, but Edward Mathis is still on the run.
