Case Story
Botched Robbery In Fort Lauderdale
Spurgeon Bowen owned a Fort Lauderdale auto body shop, and the morning of May 12, 1999, Spurgeon was giving a friend an estimate on some body work while his wife, June, was going over the books. But the typical work day turned deadly when three men came in on the hunt for money. Police say it was mid-day when Douglas Hannom, Andre Hall, and Oliver Jones suddenly appeared in the shop. Police believe the men thought Spurgeon had access to large amounts of drugs and money. But, there was no money to be found.
Spurgeon Struggles
Police say the three men began attacking Spurgeon, but he resisted and got into a struggle with Hannam. During the fight, police say Spurgeon bit off Hannam's left thumb. At that point, officials say one of Hannam's accomplices shot Spurgeon. He was taken to a local hospital, but it was too late. Sadly, he died from his wounds.
Fingertip Found
When detectives arrived at the crime scene, they found a severed thumb tip on the ground. Incredibly, fingerprint analysts were able to lift a partial print off the severed thumb and matched it up to a thumb-print in their files on Douglas Oneil Hannam. But, detectives have been unable to track him down.
