Case Story
\"The Dinnertime Bandit\"
Alan Golder could be the best cat burglar in America. Between 1976 and 1980, Golder stole millions of dollars worth of diamonds and jewels from some of America's wealthiest families. They call Golder the Dinnertime Bandit. Police say Golder figured out that the best time to rob homes was usually dinnertime -- the alarms are usually disabled and the residents are occupied with their meal. Police say Golder would often enter homes through second floor windows, and head straight for the master bedroom where he would scoop up jewels and other valuables. Meanwhile homeowners would be somewhere in the middle of their first course.
Dinnertime Turns Deadly
But Golder's crime spree took a deadly turn in 1978 when he shot Long Island millionaire Lawrence Lever during a robbery. Golder was arrested in 1980 for the killing, ending his crime spree--or so police thought. After being paroled in 1996, police say Golder didn't miss a beat. Golder is the suspect in 16 burglaries in Greenwich, an affluent suburb of New York City. Additionally officials say he is the suspect in over 50 additional burglaries in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In total police say he is suspected of stealing six million dollars worth of jewelry.
